Improving Grades and Tests Scores for Children to Adults!

I ofter wonder what it would have been like in school for me as a child if I knew about Hypnotherapy back then. I had horrible anxiety in school whether it was being able to keep up with the class or those dreaded pop quizzes and exams. School was just plain hard. My brother who was the one who introduced me to Hypnotherapy didn’t even need to show up at school and would get straight A’s.

I remember being around 9 and the school I was going to at the time decided to do an SRA ( I think it was called) reading program where you were in had a colored selection pre your reading level, I was in the olive green section. Well my friends were all in the top level and I was in the lower levels with the problem kids in the class.   I already new I had a problem and it just killed my self esteem when everyone else now knew I was in the bottom half.

Lets face it it’s hard for kids who struggle in school.  In some instances its their home life, others they just have difficulty learning, or for some its the challenge of anxiety when it’s test or exam time.

Children to adults go to class, with completed homework, studied, and ready to approach the day. He or she arrives at the exam confident about the material, and if they have experienced test anxiety, a type of performance anxiety, taking the test is the most difficult part of the equation.

Here are a few causes of test anxiety:

  • Fear of failure. While the pressure to perform can act as a motivator, it can also be devastating to individuals who tie their self-worth to the outcome of a test.
  •  Lack of preparation. Waiting until the last minute or not studying at all can leave individuals feeling anxious and overwhelmed.
  •  Poor test history. Previous problems or bad experiences with test-taking can lead to a negative mindset and influence performance on future tests.

  • Physical symptoms. Headache, nausea, diarrhea, excessive sweating, shortness of breath, rapid heartbeat, light-headedness and feeling faint can all occur. Test anxiety can lead to a panic attack, which is the abrupt onset of intense fear or discomfort in which individuals may feel like they are unable to breathe or having a heart attack.
  • Emotional symptoms. Feelings of anger, fear, helplessness and disappointment are common emotional responses to test anxiety.
  • Behavioral/Cognitive symptoms. Difficulty concentrating, thinking negatively and comparing yourself to others are common symptoms of test anxiety.

This is all very real for the person who suffers from the anxiety and in some cases panic attacks. It can harm their self esteem and keep them from going toward additional education. For me it kept me from wanting to read.  I have come a long way from that challenge, I love to read now!

There are so many older adults going back to school now to reinvent themselves. For reasons whether to finish their degree, or change of life circumstances. If you are struggling, have a lack of focus and concentration, or just having problems bring the information you know up when it is needed this maybe for you also.

If you are experiencing this sort of challenge Hypnotherapy can be a tool for you.  It just warms my heart when clients pass a state board or a child’s grades start to change significantly. There also always seems to be an improvement in behavior and a confidence in both children and adults. To me that’s a win win!

Thanks for visiting my blog, don’t forget to check out the rest of the web site.  You are only limited to your thinking in areas that Hypnotherapy can help in improving your life and the lives of others. Please feel free to pass this information on to someone you know who maybe able to use this information.  Feel free to contact me and I will be happy to give you more information.

Insomnia – Difficulty Sleeping

Wikipedia defines Insomnia or sleeplessness as a sleep disorder in which there is an inability to fall asleep or to stay asleep as long as desired. “Do you experience difficulty sleeping?” or “Do you have difficulty falling or staying asleep?”

Insomnia is typically followed by functional impairment while awake. Insomnia can occur at any age, but it is particularly common in the elderly.[4] Insomnia can be short term (up to three weeks) or long term (above 3–4 weeks), which can lead to memory problems, depression, irritability, an increased risk of heart disease, and automobile related accidents.

Insomnia as you can see or if you experience it for long periods of time, know that the above is true and can be very dangerous. I know for me at points in my life where I have not gotten enough sleep, that groggy, edgy, listless feeling kept me from being all that I could be, and doing all that I needed to do.  This was a problem for me and those around me.  I was not able to give them the time and quality of attention they may have needed at the time.  I would feel shaky, and just totally exhausted!

Hypnotherapy can  help with and or overcome issues of insomnia, whether it is having problems falling asleep at night, inability to sleep throughout the night, irregular sleep patterns, or have a good quality sleep.  We all live very busy lives, we all experience stress, tension, anxiety in our lives.  It is when it all starts to affect us physically, mentally, emotionally, and even spiritually, is when insomnia, sleepless nights begin to affect every area of our lives.

If this challenge continues, maybe Hypnotherapy is for you.  Hypnotherapy is a very relaxing way to overcome problems, key is to release the root cause, and as long as you are able to do that, there is no need for these problems to continue in most cases.  After the session is over you feel so wonderful, relaxed, and by the way a Hypnotherapy session is like having an 8-10 hour nap.  It really does feel good.

Here is a breathing relaxation technique, I use and have taught to many people, if this still does not work for you please feel free to contact me via phone or email:

Starting with the number 10, close your eyes, take in a nice long easy deep breath in, balloon your stomach up, hold it 2, 3, or 4 seconds and exhale slowly, on the exhale say something really nice to yourself, 9 repeat, this time start to focus on your body relaxing, 8 repeat, stretching out every part of your body, 7 continue repeating this breathing pattern all the way down to 1, each time relaxing  more and more.

This is also a technique you can use to build confidence or help you visualize and relax at the same time.  Always on the exhale, you want to say something nice to yourself, or visualize an activity that you would like to do such as improving your golf game, see and feel yourself there, completing the actions exactly as you want them completed. This is an example of self hypnosis.

Pediatric Hypnotherapy is also wonderful for children who also may experience sleeping issues.

As always, I am available for any questions, my phone number is 636 240 8786 or email me at

Hypnosis and Sports

Sports Hypnosis refers to the uses of Hypnotherapy to enhance sports performance. Hypnosis in sports has a therapeutic and performance-enhancing function.

Hypnosis is used in many professions, such as medicine, psychotherapy, dentistry and sports.  Sports hypnosis has been studied with in the field of sports psychology but not until around the 1950’s.  The research examines the impact of the psychological variables on the athlete’s performance.  Here are some of the abstracts on Hypnosis and Sports Performance, there is  a wide range of sporting activities listed here :

Hypnosis may do for the mind what physical activity does for the body of the athlete.  The theory of sports Hypnosis is that relaxation is the key to improve sports performance and athletes may perform better if they are able to relax mentally and focus on the task at hand.  Hypnosis may help athletes retain relaxation during practice and competition.  Hypnosis may also help to control the anxiety and manage stress in athletes.  Many times athletes get stuck or feel blocked and are not able to perform as they know they can.  Hypnotherapy may be able to help the athlete release the block to enhance their performance.

The benefits of using hypnosis helps the athletes handle personal challenges that would otherwise negatively affect their sports performance. Hypnosis helps to reinforce already established goals of the athlete, help the athlete to handle nervousness before and during the performance, help them to perform calm, relaxed, manage stress, increase concentration, eliminate distractions, increase performance and motivation, and improve bodily awareness.

A few of athletes that have had major success with the uses of Hypnosis and their information:  Micheal Jordon basketball, Marylou Retton Olympic Gymnast, Tiger Woods, and Kevin McBride who is known for beating Mike Tyson.

Hypnosis is often seen as away to prep an athlete before the game. Concentration and focus become easy when one enters the right mental state. A hypnotherapist will work with an athlete to calm their mind and rid it of distractions that can get in the way of game-play. One of the biggest names to use sport hypnotherapy is Michael Jordan. This basketball star used hypnotherapy before every game to improve his mental stamina. The whole Chicago Bulls team incorporated hypnotherapy into their pregame sessions to center themselves and gain an edge over their opponents.

Winning an Olympic medal is a huge feat. Olympic athletes train constantly and dedicate themselves to their craft. Olympic athlete Mary Lou Retton used sport hypnosis to help bring a gold, and many other medals, home to the United States. Mary Lou Retton’s style of hypnosis involved picturing her routines in her head. She would visualize her performance and convince her mind that she could achieve the idea in her head. She saw a flawless routine in her head every night, and when she went onto the mat she was able to execute her routine the same way she envisioned it playing out in her mind. Her brain trained her body to believe she could achieve a perfect routine. This approach led her to victory and a gold medal. Many other Olympic athletes also practice hypnosis. The Russian gymnastic team has been bring hypnotherapists to the Olympic games for years.

Tiger Woods has had a long and prestigious golfing career. He is arguably one of the greatest golfers in American history. He is able to make shots that no one else can, and many people marvel at his technique. Tiger Woods has been a disciple of sport hypnosis since he was 13. He uses sport hypnosis to calm his mind before golfing matches. He frees his mind from worry and pressure, and this technique allows him to perform better. Hypnosis is often used for this cause. If one clears one’s mind from distractions, then they can focus solely on the game. This allows an individual to devote all their concentration to the game, so they can play better.

Any athlete can use this technique to improve their game. Boxer Kevin McBride is known for beating Mike Tyson in a championship fight. The boxer used hypnosis to uncover his full potential. The subconscious mind is thought to have a huge amount of untapped power. The brain does not function at its full potential during every moment of the day. Sport hypnosis helps athletes channel more of their brain power when they play. Anyone can call upon this power and use more of their mind. Using more of one’s mind can help an athlete achieve new records and accomplish things they had not done before.

Bedwetting and Hypnosis

I can remember as a child I was very close to my cousin.  She was never able to spend the night at my house or any other friends houses because she wet the bed.  I remember how upset and embarrassed she was.  I think she was 12 or 13 before she was able to get control of this problem.

Usually by that time I get a call from a mom about their child’s bed wetting problem, mom and child are at wits end.  They have had waterproof rubber on the sheets, change and wash sheets sometimes daily. Some have used an alarm to wake up the child and for some medication is involved.  It is just heart breaking and always takes me back to how my cousin felt so many years ago.

Bed wetting impacts the child at a very deep level, and at the same time when the concept of self are developing.

Imagine not being able to spend the night at friends house, aren’t able to go to camp, or over night soccer tournaments.  It’s a secret for only you, your mom, and your dad.  Parents are afraid to discuss this problem with the child so they do not hurt the child’s feelings.

There are 2 components that a Consulting Hypnotist needs to works with the physical and the emotional. When working with the emotional the child lets go of the root cause and working with the physical getting the mind to make changes necessary for the body to function the way it is meant to function.

In 1996 I was Pediatric Certified.  It’s such a joy to be able to work with children and help them to overcome their problems so quickly.  What a great way to overcome this problem in what could be just 1 session.

If you have a child or know someone with a child experiencing this problem or an other problem please feel free to pass my information on. Children need us to guide, love, and nurture them.  This could be one less problem in their young lives, so that they can just be kids. Thanks for reading and all you do for the children in your life.

New Resolutions: Didn’t work now what!!

Ah, yes. New Year’s Resolutions. It’s a tradition that invokes everything from delight to resignation, has a success rate akin to winning the lottery and has the power to launch feelings of guilt, failure, and dark humor in a flash. And yet every year, millions of people are drawn to the ritualistic hope of achieving some magical outcome as if, perhaps, FINALLY, we will triumph over a stubborn habit or fear that has resisted (clobbered, thrashed, walloped?) our most sincere efforts in years past.

Statistics say that 80% fail by Jan. 31st, if it has to do with health 90% by the 15th.  Wow, by the end of the year only 5% made it with their resolution in tacked, with statistics like this what are we going to do?

When we fail at a goal over and over again, our minds are set up for failure. So why would we start that weight reduction program again and again after the holiday season where we are free to eat what we want and as often as we want.

Why not break that habit (the cycle) and start before the holiday, before we start to abuse ourselves.  How about starting new and fresh now, we all know the holiday season is hectic.  Hypnotherapy would be a great kick off the the coming months and can continue to work through the New Year and become your new norm.

Do you want to give your family and mostly yourself a Christmas gift that will keep on giving? Why not quit smoking now!

Do you experience stress, tension, anxiety, or even panic attacks, and Oh to be free from that!!!! That’s a gift for yourself that could be in as little as 1 session and a 1 – 11/2 hour time commitment.

Let’s break the past habit of waiting till a time when you are already set up for failure.   Time for a change; how about now!

Call me know and let’s start a healthy wonderful new norm for you. 636-240-8786

How can Hypnotherapy save on Insurance Costs for your Business

Health Care: Companies are feeling the crunch in increased insurance rates.

Do your employees smoke? Are they overweight? Are they stressed with the new work loads they are now carrying? This IS going to affect your bottom line eventually in health care costs rising and lower productivity.

Why not contact Glavin Hypnotherapy+ for Corporate and Group Rates. Did you know for most people they are able to quit smoking in 1 session, same with working on stress! When your talking weight its a little more complicated and takes a minimum of 5 sessions.

Sessions are 1 to 1 1/2 hours long.  I do not recommend employers pay for the session. It is just as important therapy for the client to except the responsibility of over coming the challenge they are experiencing.

If the company wants to have a reward program that is something different. I have heard companies reimbursing employees $100.00 for whatever therapy they chose to use to quit smoking. There is no responsibility on the employee and they are rewarded with a bonus. The success long term is minimal.

Karen will be happy to talk with you and set up an arrangement for you and your employers to GET THE MOST OUT OF LIFE at 636-240-8786 or email
